MIKE KEARNEY
"I'm teaming up with the Katie McBride Foundation to run the 2016 New York City Marathon. A 2008 graduate of Fordham University and 2004 graduate of St. Joseph's Prep, the Jesuit tradition of 'Men for Others' is deeply rooted in me. Being able to join the McBride family in raising funds for the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island in memory of their daughter and sister, Katie, is an honor.
I was a sprinter on the Fordham Track and Field Team for 4 years. I met Mr. McBride at the Fordham Track and Field Golf outing this year when he and assistant basketball coach Mike DePaoli joined us to speak about The Katie McBride Foundation. Mr. McBride's son, Mike, was part of the Fordham Basketball program during his time at Fordham. They were looking for a Fordham Track Alum to be part of their Marathon Team to keep it in the Fordham Family. The New York City Marathon has always been a great event to watch each year but never something I thought I'd have the opportunity to participate in. After speaking with Mr. McBride and Coach DePaoli, I knew that joining their team and volunteering to run was an easy decision to make. I come from a large family and have been raised on the Jesuit tradition, getting involved with the Katie McBride Foundation was something I wanted to do and represent.
Having the ability to honor the memory of a family member whose time came too soon is a wonderful way to keep Katie's spirit alive. I hope that you can join me in raising funds for the Katie McBride Foundation so that together we can honor Katie's life, help raise awareness for the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island and for the family support services it provides and other local worthy causes."
BRYAN SUTHERLAND
"This November I have the honor of representing the Katie McBride Foundation in the 2016 New York City Marathon. Chaminade’s crest reads, Strength In Unity. I take special pride in raising awareness for the Ronald McDonald House of Long because it allows me to support a fellow Flyer, support his family, and strengthen their charitable cause. Mike was a classmate of mine, a fellow 2008 grad. Mike’s family lost a daughter and sister, and in their time of need they were supported by the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. Ronald McDonald House provided family support services while the McBride family was dealing with a devastating tragedy. I consider it both a duty and an honor to give back to the organization that helped a member of the Chaminade family.
While at Chaminade, I was a member of the track and cross country teams during my junior and senior year. Participating in Chaminade’s athletic programs is what made me the person I am today and instilled in me the motivation to be a Chaminade Man.
I first learned of the Katie McBride Foundation through a former track teammate and the Chaminade cross country coach. I learned from Mr. McBride that he was specifically seeking a Chaminade Alum to represent the foundation in the 2016 New York City Marathon. I was immediately interested. After speaking with Mr. McBride and meeting him in person, I knew that it would be an amazing opportunity to give back to a local charity while also honoring Katie’s memory. It is a privilege to represent the Katie McBride Foundation and raise awareness for the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island."
