Noelle Cutter | NYC Marathon 2018

Updated: Nov 4, 2018

First and foremost I am a busy #momof4 that I am to Lily (7), Lucy (5), Jack (5), and Isabel (3).  They are the inspiration and energy behind all that I do.  I am married to Paul, who shares my love of family and passion for running/biking/swimming.  You cannot imagine the chaos and insanity our household experiences every day, but it is perfect too. We basically live by the laws of thermodynamics: you can’t win, you can’t quit, and you can’t break even.  They are my perfect chaos.

When I am not trying to keep up with the chaos I am busy doing science.  I work as both a professor where I share my passion of science with undergraduate and graduate students and I run a lab. In my lab we focus on the epigenetics of chemoresistance in Medulloblastoma.  That is a mouthful of a statement, but it basically means that we are interested in understanding some of the underlying causes that results in patients not responding to cancer treatments…in the hopes of offering them a better treatment plan.  Medulloblastoma is common in pediatric patients, usually under the age of 5 and has a poor prognosis.  My nephew, Louie, was diagnosed at 16 months old and succumb to the cancer in just a short six weeks.  He is the driving reason behind what I do and my passion for supporting families going through similar struggles.

When I met Mike and heard about the Katie McBride Foundation I knew it was a match made in Heaven (maybe by Katie and Louie).  The mission of the foundation resonated with me and to be able to run the NYC marathon with them truly was a perfect fit.  I am humbled to be part of such an amazing organization.  It is easy to put one foot in front of the other and endure 26.2 miles.  The real struggle are with those families battling every day for their children. I salute you, your journey, and I only hope a small part of what I do can make a difference.

I also strive to continually be able to communicate what I do to the community.  Public outreach, especially when it comes to biomedical research is so important.  If we can get our message out, share our passion, then I am hopeful we can get the support that biomedical research so desperately needs.  With the help of the Katie McBride Foundation I hope to be able to share my love of running, passion for research, and joy of helping families together.
